The best Amharic keyboards for Android

We make Addiyon Keyboard, so read this knowing that. We have tried to be fair: every keyboard here is a reasonable choice for someone, and we say where the others do better than we do.

Which one should you pick?

You type Amharic every day on your phone

Pick a keyboard that converts English letters and suggests whole words, so you are not hunting for letters. Addiyon and Keyman both do this. Addiyon is made only for Amharic and English on Android, has no ads and adds AI edits; Keyman also runs on computers. See Addiyon vs Keyman.

You mostly type English and sometimes Amharic

If you already use Gboard or SwiftKey, adding Amharic as a second language there means one less app. Gboard also has Amharic voice typing and handwriting. See Addiyon vs Gboard.

You prefer tapping Fidel directly

If you learned to type on a Fidel layout, HaHu offers several. Addiyon’s keys show the Fidel letter each key starts, but you always type by sound.

You need it on a computer too

Keyman works on Windows, Mac and Linux. Or use our free online Amharic typing tool, which uses the same spelling as Addiyon. More in Amharic keyboard for PC.

What makes Addiyon different

  • The whole word is re-read on every keystroke, so a later letter can still fix an earlier one, and backspace never leaves half-converted letters.
  • Suggestions from an Amharic dictionary, offline. Type bet and ቤት is offered even though the strict spelling is biet.
  • AI quick edits for Amharic: Fix grammar, Professional, Friendly, Shorten and more, free each day.
  • No ads, and typing stays on your phone.

Where others do better: Addiyon has no iPhone or computer version yet, no handwriting input, and its voice typing uses your phone’s speech service rather than its own.

Common questions.

Which Amharic keyboard is best?

It depends on how you type. If you type Amharic sounds with English letters and want no ads, Addiyon is built for that. If you already use Gboard or SwiftKey for other languages, adding Amharic there is simplest. If you need the same keyboard on Android and a computer, Keyman covers both.

Are Amharic keyboards free?

All the keyboards on this page are free to install. Several of the popular Play Store apps show ads. Addiyon, Gboard and Keyman do not.

Which Amharic keyboard works on iPhone?

Gboard and Keyman offer Amharic on iPhone. Addiyon and Microsoft SwiftKey’s Amharic are Android only.

Type Amharic in every app.

Addiyon Keyboard is free on Google Play. It turns English letters into Fidel as you type, works offline, and keeps your typing on your phone.
