How Ge’ez numbers work
There are 20 numerals: one sign for each of 1 to 9 (፩–፱), one for each ten from 10 to 90 (፲–፺), one for hundred (፻) and one for ten thousand (፼). There is no zero.
To write a number, split it into pairs of digits from the right. Write each pair with a tens sign and a ones sign, and put ፻ or ፼ between the pairs:
| Number | Read as | Ge’ez |
|---|---|---|
| 25 | 20 + 5 | ፳፭ |
| 365 | 3 × 100 + 65 | ፫፻፷፭ |
| 1,984 | 19 × 100 + 84 | ፲፱፻፹፬ |
| 2,019 | 20 × 100 + 19 | ፳፻፲፱ |
| 10,001 | 10,000 + 1 | ፼፩ |
| 1,000,000 | 100 × 10,000 | ፻፼ |
A leading one is dropped before ፻ and ፼: 100 is ፻, not ፩፻.
Where they are used
Ge’ez numerals appear in Ethiopian calendar dates, church books, chapter and verse numbers, page numbers in traditional books, and on formal documents and invitations. For prices and phone numbers, everyday Amharic writing uses the ordinary digits 0–9.
Common questions.
How do you write 2019 in Ge’ez numbers?
፳፻፲፱: twenty (፳) hundreds (፻), then nineteen (፲፱). 2019 is the current year in the Ethiopian calendar, which began on መስከረም 1 (11 September 2026).
Is there a zero in Ge’ez numbers?
No. Ge’ez numerals have no zero and no place value. Empty places are simply left out, so 101 is ፻፩ (hundred, one) and 2000 is ፳፻.
How do you write 1000 in Ge’ez?
፲፻, ten hundreds. There is no separate sign for a thousand. The next sign up is ፼, ten thousand.
How do you write one million?
፻፼, a hundred ten-thousands. Larger numbers repeat the pattern: hundreds of ፼, then ፼፼ for a hundred million.
