Privacy Policy
Overview
Addiyon Keyboard is an Android input method for typing Amharic in the Ge'ez / Fidel script. It is published by Addiyon LLC. This policy covers the Addiyon Keyboard app (com.addiyon.keyboard). It does not cover other apps you use the keyboard inside of, or the operating system itself.
In short:
- Typing is private. Typing, transliteration and word suggestions run entirely on your device. What you type is never collected.
- AI is optional and on request. Text leaves your phone only when you tap an AI quick edit, and only the text being edited. AI never runs in password fields.
- An account is needed only for AI. You can type without one. You sign in the first time you use an AI edit.
- Analytics is content-free, on by default, and can be turned off in Preferences.
Typing stays on your device
Keyboard input, transliteration (turning "selam" into ሰላም), word suggestions, next-word predictions and swipe typing run entirely on your device, against dictionary files bundled inside the app. Words you use are learned locally to improve your suggestions (see What is stored on your device); they are never sent to us.
AI quick edits
The AI bar above the keys offers Fix grammar, Casual, Humanize, Professional, Formal, Friendly, Shorten and Summarize. Nothing is sent until you tap one of them. When you do:
- What is sent: the text you selected, or, if nothing is selected, the text in the field you are typing in, together with the edit you picked. Nothing else on your screen is sent.
- Where it goes: to our AI service over an encrypted connection. Addiyon Keyboard uses the same service and accounts as Preener, our AI writing app, which Addiyon LLC also runs. The service passes the text to an AI model provider to produce the result: OpenAI first, and Google Gemini if OpenAI is unavailable. We ask OpenAI not to store these requests. Providers process the text only to return the result, under their API terms.
- What we keep: the text you sent and the result are stored with your account for up to 24 hours and then deleted automatically. A copy of the result is kept for up to 30 days so a repeated request is not charged twice, then deleted. We also keep a record of each AI action without its text (for example the edit chosen, text length, the model used, its cost, and the app version) to run daily limits, prevent abuse and understand costs.
- Where AI never runs: AI edits are blocked in password fields, and the app never reads those fields for AI.
You can hide the AI bar at any time in Settings → AI actions. The keyboard works fully without it.
Your account
The first time you tap an AI edit, you sign in with your Google account or with a 6-digit code sent to your email. You never need an account just to type.
- What we store: your email address and, if you use Google, your name and profile photo address as Google shares them. We send sign-in codes by email through our email provider.
- Security data: when you use our service we process your IP address and the approximate country it indicates, to keep accounts secure, apply rate limits and prevent abuse. IP-based rate-limit records are kept for 2 days. When a new account is created, the account's email, sign-in method, app version, language, IP address and country are shared with us internally so we can spot abuse.
- App integrity: to confirm requests come from the genuine app, the app uses Firebase App Check with Google Play Integrity. This sends device and app integrity signals to Google; it does not include what you type.
- On your phone: the app keeps a sign-in token, your email and your profile photo address in its private storage. Signing out in Settings → AI actions removes them.
Addiyon Pro purchases
Where Google Play offers it, you can subscribe to Addiyon Pro for more AI edits and Pro keyboard themes. Payments are handled entirely by Google Play; we never see your card or payment details. We receive the purchase details Google Play provides (such as the subscription product, its status and renewal dates) and link them to your account so Pro works on your devices. You manage or cancel the subscription in Google Play.
Anonymous usage analytics
Product analytics is on by default and can be turned off at any time under Preferences → Share anonymous usage analytics. When on, Addiyon uses Google Analytics for Firebase to measure aggregate app opens, keyboard sessions, app version, general device information, and approximate city. Firebase assigns a pseudonymous identifier to an installation. Google derives approximate location from a network address and does not log the network address in Analytics.
Analytics events never contain typed text, suggestions, AI edits, voice transcripts, target-app identity, field information, contacts, account identifiers, or advertising identifiers. Google Signals, advertising-identifier collection, and advertising personalization are disabled. Turning analytics off stops future collection and resets the Firebase Analytics installation data.
Google Analytics event-level and pseudonymous user data is configured for two months without extending that period when a user returns. Aggregated reports may remain after event-level data is deleted. Learn more about how Google uses information from apps that use its services.
What we never collect
We do not collect, log, store, sell, or transmit:
- the text you type, except the text you choose to send by tapping an AI edit;
- anything from password fields;
- your contacts, precise location, photos, files, or email content;
- your clipboard, suggestions, personal dictionary, voice recordings or voice transcripts;
- the identity of the app you are typing in, field labels, or typing cadence;
- advertising identifiers or advertising profiles.
No selling of data
We do not sell your data, and we do not use it for advertising or ad targeting. There are no third-party ad SDKs that track you across apps. We share data only with the service providers described in this policy (AI model providers, Google for analytics, app integrity and Play billing, our hosting providers and our email provider), only to run the app, or when the law requires it.
Permissions
As a keyboard (input method), the app runs within Android's secure IME framework. In plain language:
- Internet and network state (
INTERNET,ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE): used for AI edits you tap, sign-in, Pro purchases, app integrity checks, and the content-free analytics described above. Never used to send what you type otherwise. - Google Play billing (
BILLING): lets you buy Addiyon Pro through Google Play. - Microphone (
RECORD_AUDIO): used only for the optional voice typing feature, and only while you are actively dictating. Android asks for your explicit consent before this is ever granted, and the keyboard works fully without it. See the next section. - Vibrate (
VIBRATE): used for haptic feedback on keypress, which you can turn off in the app's settings. - Permissions added by Google libraries (such as
WAKE_LOCK, install referrer and Android ad-services attribution entries from Firebase, and biometric entries from Google sign-in): these come with Google's standard libraries. Addiyon does not use advertising, and advertising-identifier collection is disabled.
Voice typing
Voice typing is optional, off by default, and only runs while you hold or activate the microphone key. When you use it, Addiyon Keyboard does not process your audio itself. It passes the request to the speech-recognition service that is installed and selected on your device. On most phones this is Google's speech recognition, though the manufacturer may provide a different one.
That service may send your audio off your device for processing. Whether it does, what it retains, and for how long is determined by that provider, not by Addiyon. Once we hand the request over, the audio is governed by the privacy policy of the speech-recognition provider on your device (for Google, the Privacy Policy).
Addiyon Keyboard never receives, stores, or transmits a recording. It receives only the recognized text, which is inserted into whatever field you are typing in. If you prefer that no audio leave your device, simply do not use the microphone key, or deny the microphone permission entirely. Every other feature keeps working.
What is stored on your device
The app saves the following in Android's standard private app storage:
- Settings: keyboard language, theme, keyboard height, number row, sound, vibration, letter popup, AI bar and analytics settings, and a simple counter used to decide when to ask you for a Play Store review.
- Personal typing data: your personal dictionary and text shortcuts, words you removed from suggestions, recent emoji, and counts of the words and word pairs you use most (up to 1,200 words and 1,800 pairs per language) so suggestions improve. Nothing is learned in password fields or fields that ask for no suggestions. You can remove any word or clear it all in the personal dictionary screen.
- Clipboard: recent clips are kept in memory for up to an hour; clips you pin (up to 30) are saved until you remove them.
- Account: if you sign in, the sign-in token, email and profile photo address described above.
All of this stays on your phone and is deleted when you uninstall the app or clear its data.
Android Backup
If you have Android's built-in backup enabled, Android may include your settings and personal typing data (personal dictionary, shortcuts, learned word counts, recent emoji and pinned clips) in the backup it makes to your own Google account, so they are restored when you set up a new phone. This backup is performed by Android, stored in your Google account, and governed by Google's privacy policy. We cannot read it. You can disable it in your device's system backup settings.
How long we keep data
- AI edit text and results: up to 24 hours; the duplicate-request copy of a result: up to 30 days.
- Sign-in codes: valid for 10 minutes and removed within a day. Expired sign-in sessions are removed within an hour.
- IP-based rate-limit records: 2 days.
- Account details (email, name, photo address) and Pro purchase records: while your account exists.
- Usage records without text (AI actions, costs, app version): kept for billing, limits and abuse prevention; when you delete your account they are unlinked from it.
- Google Analytics data: two months at event level, as described above.
Deleting your account
You can ask us to delete your account and the data linked to it at any time:
- Email keyboard [at] addiyon.com from the address you sign in with, with the subject "Delete my account". You don't need to give a reason.
- We confirm by email and delete your account within 30 days. Because Addiyon Keyboard and Preener share accounts, this deletes the account for both apps.
- Deleting your account does not cancel a Google Play subscription. Cancel Addiyon Pro in Google Play first.
Signing out or uninstalling the app removes the account data stored on your phone, but does not delete your account.
Links to other apps
The app can open a few external destinations at your request: the Google Play listing (when you choose to rate or share the app), Google Play subscriptions (to manage Pro), and Telegram or your email app (when you choose to send feedback). The app also uses Google Play's in-app review feature, provided by the Play Store app on your device. Choosing any of these hands you off to that app, under its own privacy policy.
Children
Addiyon Keyboard is a general-purpose typing tool and is not directed at children. AI edits and accounts are not intended for children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country), and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.
Your choices and rights
You can type without an account, hide the AI bar, turn analytics off, deny microphone access, clear your personal dictionary, sign out, disable Android backup, uninstall the app, or ask us to delete your account. Where applicable, you may also ask for a copy of the data linked to your account, ask us to correct it, object to or restrict processing, withdraw consent, or complain to your local data-protection authority.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this address with a new effective date. Material changes to how the app handles data will also be described in the release notes of the version that introduces them.
