How to write Amharic on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok

Every big social app shows Amharic, but none of them comes with an Amharic keyboard. Set one up once and you can write posts, comments, captions and bios in Fidel in any app.

Set up Amharic typing (one time)

  1. Install Addiyon Keyboard from Google Play and open it.
  2. Tap Enable in settings, switch Addiyon on, then tap Switch keyboard and choose it.
  3. Open any app and type Amharic sounds with English letters: selam → ሰላም.

For a step-by-step version with your phone’s menus, see How to type Amharic on Android.

Facebook and Messenger

  • Posts and comments: tap the text box and type as usual. Suggestions above the keys finish long words for you.
  • Pages and groups: page names, about text and group rules can all be in Amharic.
  • Messenger: works the same way. Tap the globe key to switch to English for a word, then tap it again to come back.

Instagram

  • Captions and comments: write in Amharic, then add hashtags. Hashtags can be in Amharic too, for example #ኢትዮጵያ.
  • Bio and name: both accept Amharic. Your @username must stay in English letters.
  • Stories: the text tool uses your keyboard, so Amharic works there as well.

TikTok

  • Captions: type them in Amharic before you post. Keep the first line short, since TikTok cuts long captions.
  • On-screen text: TikTok’s text tool uses your keyboard, so Fidel works in videos too.
  • Comments and bio: both accept Amharic.

Polish a post before you share it

Addiyon Keyboard has quick edits in the bar above the keys: Fix grammar corrects spelling and grammar, Shorten trims a caption, Friendly or Casual changes the tone, and Professional suits a business page. Undo always brings your own words back.

On a computer

Write your post in the free online Amharic typing tool, press Copy Amharic, and paste it into Facebook, Instagram or TikTok on the web. Phrases you use a lot are on Common Amharic phrases.

Common questions.

Do Facebook, Instagram and TikTok support Amharic?

Yes. All three show Amharic text in posts, comments, captions, bios and messages. You only need an Amharic keyboard to write it.

Can I write my Instagram or TikTok bio in Amharic?

Yes. Your bio and display name can be in Amharic. Your username (the @name) must use English letters, numbers, dots or underscores.

Why do I see boxes instead of Amharic letters?

Very old phones may lack an Ethiopic font. Update Android if you can. Everyone with a recent phone will see your Amharic correctly, even if your own screen shows boxes.

Can I make a caption shorter or more polished?

Yes. In Addiyon Keyboard, tap Shorten to trim a long caption, or Fix grammar to correct spelling before you post. Undo brings your text back.

Type Amharic in every app.

Addiyon Keyboard is free on Google Play. It turns English letters into Fidel as you type, works offline, and keeps your typing on your phone.
